Wesbrook eagles’ nest timeline

A bald eagle nest near Ross Drive and Birney Avenue has been actively monitored by Diamond Head Consulting, a qualified environmental consulting firm, since 2017. When construction activity in Wesbrook Place began in the vicinity of the nest, UBC Properties Trust engaged Diamond Head to develop a Protected Species Management Plan to protect the eagles throughout the development process.

As part of the Plan, construction near the nest has been guided to minimize impacts to the eagles, while noise and nest activity have been monitored continuously. In 2022 prior to adjacent construction and under a permit from the Ministry of Forests, a temporary protective cone was installed on the nest to protect it and minimize nesting activity in the area. The Hancock Wildlife Foundation installed an alternate nest in a tree outside the noise buffer.

In 2025, after adjacent construction was complete, the cone was removed from the original nest before the 2026 breeding season, and monitoring continued. While eagle activity in the Wesbrook area has been high with multiple nests in the area, no nesting took place at this site. Based on Diamond Head Consulting’s observations, the nest was not adopted this season.

A Qualified Environmental Professional will continue to monitor the nest under the Plan, and the nest will be re-assessed ahead of the 2027 breeding season.

All development in Wesbrook Place remains subject to the Protected Species Management Plan (2017) to ensure compliance with provincial regulations and the protection of critical habitat features.
