Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre
The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre contains three ice surfaces and is located on the site of the former Thunderbird Winter Sports Centre.
The facility was used for practice, men’s and women’s round robin, and medal games during the 2010 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
The main arena has 5,500 permanent spectator seats. This ice sheet is convertible from International to North American ice size and from hockey to sledge hockey. The original Father David Bauer Rink was retained and refurbished.
UBC Thunderbird Arena was designed and constructed equivalent to LEED Silver standard and incorporates sustainable features to reduce environmental impact. Waste heat from ice-making processes is used for building heat, shower hot water, etc. to reduce energy consumption and operating costs. Many building components were reused or recycled during the demolition and reconstruction process.
